How to make your Android more secure

You may or may not be aware that Android phones lack some security features. This means they are potentially easier targets for hackers, snoopers, spies and cybercriminals.

Globally, more than 70% of people who have a mobile phone use Android phones

If you travel a lot, you may want to consider a multi network SIM card. A multi network SIM card automatically switches to the best Wi-Fi network when you are out and about. This means that you will rarely lose signal and therefore won’t lose access to apps or important work just because one network’s coverage is patchy.

Why are Androids more vulnerable?

Android is open source, meaning it can be studied and scrutinised and vulnerabilities can be exploited.

Androids use rooting which allows users to install their preferred version (which may have vulnerabilities).

Androids allow the installation of APK files from unknown sources (potential malware risk).

Older Android models will have fewer security features which may leave them vulnerable.

The most commonly found security threats for Android are spyware, ransomware, Trojans, worms and viruses.

How to strengthen the security of your Android

1. Use a VPN: installing a VPN adds an additional layer of security, making your internet connection safer. Always choose a reliable VPN service.

2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): this is a very effective way of protecting yourself against hackers. It adds a second verification step which only you can access (such as an email or a text message with a code).

3. Don’t install apps from third parties: only install apps directly from Play Store.

4. Only use trusted Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi is easier to hack, so only use this if you are in a critical situation.

5. Block all notifications and permissions: this will deny access to unrecognised people, software and websites.

6. Install updates when prompted: this ensures you benefit from the latest fixes for any new vulnerabilities found.

7. Don’t allow your smartphone to save passwords: this prevents hackers from being able to log into your accounts. Consider using a password manager.
